*The Challenge*
Lichen sclerosus (LS) is a chronic inflammatory condition that causes thinning, white patches, and intense itching in the genital areas. Where a flare-up occurs, it is notoriously difficult to treat. It often requires lifelong, high-potency steroids. However, long-term steroid use can lead to permanent skin thinning (atrophy), easy bruising and yeast infection, and systemic issues like adrenal suppression, fatty liver, and glaucoma.
*A Natural Alternative: Zinc Salve*
NeuEve is developing *Zinc Salve*, a non-steroidal, extra-strength, all-natural formula designed for severe flare-ups and as a steroid-sparing product. It is based on our existing Salve-gentle formula, with additional natural anti-inflammatory ingredients, including zinc. Zinc oxide, as nano-particles, creates a physical barrier against irritants like urine and sweat while its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties soothe redness, heal skin tears, and prevent painful tissue fusing and infections. Using this product will help reduce exposure to the high-potency steroid, preventing steroid-related side effects.
*Study Details*
We are seeking *10 U.S. volunteers* (women, ages 18–70) with a doctor-confirmed LS diagnosis to participate in a 30-day trial. Participants must have a flare-up or a severe form of LS for which other treatment products, such as the NeuEve Salve and Salve-Gentle, have failed to provide relief.
- *Protocol:* Apply a pea-sized amount to the affected area multiple times daily for 30 days for each round of the study. Participants must use only the Zinc Salve for LS during this period (no steroids or other products).
- *Tracking:* Record daily symptoms in a simple provided journal template.
- *Cost:* A $100 deposit is required for participating in the study, which includes 1 jar of Zinc Salve (about a 1-month supply) for each round of the product testing. We collect a deposit to ensure that most participants will complete the study. The study may be conducted for multiple rounds until a satisfactory product is developed that successfully manages severe LS symptoms in most participants. In past studies, 3-10 rounds of testing have been conducted before a satisfactory product is finalized. The deposit will be fully refunded upon completion and submission of feedback on the final round of the study, making the final cost $0 for all the products tested.
