Can I take the sea buckthorn oil supplement while on the blood thinner warfarin?

Blood thinners can smooth blood flow through the cardiovascular system. They can prevent the formation of blood clots or keep existing blood clots from growing. Most blood thinners are prescribed to treat and/or reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke.

However, overdosing blood thinner can also have potential side effects associated with bleeding.

Sea buckthorn oil itself has some blood thinning effect if taken orally. This is why it can help prevent heart attack and stroke.

It is a natural blood thinner. Its effect is not as strong as a blood thinner drug, but if you take it at a high dose, its blood thinning effect may add up.

However, if you are currently on a blood thinning drug, combining sea buckthorn with a blood-thinning drug could raise your risk of bleeding. This means that you may not take sea buckthorn oil or not taking it at its full recommended dose.

Can you take sea buckthorn oil at a reduced dose to get its benefits for the overall dryness relief?

If your overall dryness is severe, like severe dry eyes, dry mouth, and skin dryness, and you are in desperate need to find relief, you may take a 1/2 to 1/4 reduced dose of sea buckthorn, like 1 pill a day (500 mg/day) or 1 pill every other day (250 mg/day) with meal and observe if you have any discomfort.

If you do not notice any discomfort, you may be safe. You may continue taking a low dose sea buckthorn oil supplement.

What types of discomfort on blood thinner do you need to look for?

Blood thinner overdose often causes abnormal bleeding problems.

Bleeding related discomfort symptoms may include:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Nosebleeds
  • Dizziness due to chronic loss of blood
  • Prolonged wound bleeding
  • Blood in urine or stool
  • Unusual bruising
  • Vomiting blood

Even if you do not experience any of the above listed discomforts, but if you plan a surgery in the near future, you should avoid taking sea buckthorn oil before and after the procedure.

It would be a good idea to discuss your plan of taking a dietary supplement, like the sea buckthorn oil pill, with your doctor who prescribed the blood thinner.

If your overall dryness is not severe and your only issue is vaginal dryness, you do not need to take sea buckthorn oil orally. You can safely use NeuEve balm cream and suppositories. These products deliver sea buckthorn oil topically at a safer low dose.

Topically delivered sea buckthorn oil at a low dose does not have much a systemic effect. This means that it does not increase your risk of bleeding even if you are on a blood thinner.

This article explains the difference between orally ingested and topically applied sea buckthorn oil.

Therefore, using NeuEve vulva balm cream and/or NeuEve suppositories is a safer and more effective way to relieve vaginal dryness.
